Biography
Jean-Jacques Dessalines was a Haitian revolutionary leader and the first ruler of independent Haiti. Born into slavery, he became one of the key leaders of the Haitian Revolution alongside Toussaint Louverture. On January 1, 1804, he declared Haitian independence and was subsequently proclaimed Emperor Jacques I.
